Up Close & Personal

We spoke with the artist about their art and their journey to creating beautiful work.

Being an artist isn't a calling for me, I was born to do it

Ismed Rizal

Ismed Rizal hails from Jakarta, Indonesia and moved to Bali over 15 years ago. As a kid in school, he was always known for his ‘doodles’ … even using his talent to get out of trouble one day by presenting a drawing to a teacher who was none too pleased with him! She of course forgave him when she saw his brilliant work!

Drawing then became much more than just a hobby for Rizal, it actually became the way he most effectively communicated with people, in a more vivid and visual way than spoken words.

On moving to Bali, he initially settled in the northern part of Bali using his artistic skills in the tattoo industry. However not long after he moved to the south where he now has an art workshop and small team of budding artists.

IN THE STUDIO

Rizal started at the bottom working for other artists and honing his craft. After around 1.5 years, he made the big move to set his own workshop up ... something he's very proud of. He not only creates his own original art but also employs apprentices to work with, teach and share his knowledge with, in the hope that one day they too can start their own workshops. Nothing gives him more joy than seeing others also succeed at something they love and many have gone on to do so.

Rizal struggles to describe his style of painting … his only goal is for it to be original. The creative process always starts with meditation, clearing his mind of the everyday and drawing on his inner creativity. This generates a theme and this theme then runs through each piece in that collection.

"Originality comes in many forms and I want all my pieces to be relevant, original and impactful - wherever that creative inspiration takes me".

WORK

Having produced many collections to date, his latest titled 'The Everyday' is the one he loves the most. The simplicity is it's beauty along with the bold, modern colours he chose to frame each piece.

Rizal views his art as a piece of his soul captured on canvas and a way of communicating with the audience. He feels privileged to be able to work in this industry, sharing his passion.

His aspiration is to be known for his artwork and therefore to have a voice in this world. He feels he has way more to give and with the will and persistence that he has, he's looking forward to the future and what it holds.

Originality comes in many forms and I want all my pieces to be relevant, original and impactful - wherever that creative inspiration takes me
