Up Close & Personal
We spoke with the artist about their art and their journey to creating beautiful work.

Komang Suweca
Born in a small regency in central Bali, Komang now lives with his beautiful wife, and his two children, in a village close to the Art ‘capital’ of Bali, Sukawati.
He first got into art as a young child, thanks to his older brother, who is also a keen artist. At first, it was a hobby for Komang, but the teachers at his junior high school were so impressed with his work that they encouraged him to pursue this talent and that’s exactly what he did, attending the School of Arts in Bali’s capital, Denpasar.

IN THE STUDIO
After Komang graduated, he started to explore what would be his heartbeat as an artist. A museum trip inspired him to focus on traditional and scenery pieces. His first ever professional piece being of a traditional Balinese village.
Then in 2005, he attended an exhibition with his mentors where he was introduced to 'colour' which inspired him to move towards abstract expression.
"I love colours and combinations … it's like a game seeing how they all come together."

WORK
Komang's favorite piece that fuses his love for abstract with the traditional is his 'Pralaya' piece. An intricate story of destruction and creation. Ying and Yang. Balance. It's a piece he loves doing as the detailed layering, to him, is like telling a story that builds and builds until the final chapter. It draws him in, allowing him to get lost in its' creation.
Aside from his full time profession as an artist, Komang also spends time sharing his knowledge of art through guiding and coaching local young artists.
"It's a great privilege to be able to share my gift with others and watch them grow. I was lucky to have great mentors when I was first starting out and my hope is that I can guide these young kids to become the great artists that I know they can be."

Helping local children who are less fortunate than ourselves is part of what The Yellow Brick Road Gallery is all about. Nothing makes us happier than seeing the smile on the children's faces when they have a brush and some paint to go create.
